Chinese Star Goalie to Retire after Salt Lake Games

Chinese star goalie Guo Hong will retire from the national side after the Salt Lake City Olympic Games, she said after helping China to a 2-1 victory over Kazakhstan on Tuesday.

Chinese star goalie Guo Hong will retire from the national side after the Salt Lake City Olympic Games, she said after helping China to a 2-1 victory over Kazakhstan on Tuesday.

"This was my last game with Team China," said Guo, a Chinese international since 1992, after the 7th-8th decider of the women'sice hockey tournament of the Games.

Competing in her second Olympics, Guo blocked 206 out of a record 232 shots on the Chinese goal at Salt Lake City.

"I felt disappointed that the Chinese goal were under so many shots," Guo said. "I just tried to block every shot because it wasmy last Olympics."

Guo, 28, planned to study ice hockey in Canada after her retirement.

"At first I will study English for a few months, and then I will go to study ice hockey or goal keeping," she said.

After academic study, Guo will probably start a coach career.

"Though I won't play for the national team any more, I will do something in relation with ice hockey because I love the sport so much.

"Maybe I will be a coach."

Guo, who has been the defensive foundation for the Chinese national team since joining it in 1992, helped China finish fourthat the 18th Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. At the 1996 Pacific Rim Championships, she saved 38 of 39 shots in a 1-0 loss to Canada and was later dubbed "The Great Wall of China" by Canadian players.
