United Nations Human Rights Envoy to Myanmar Paulo Sergio Pinheiro ended his 10-day mission to inspect the human rights situation in the country Tuesday.
During his third trip to Myanmar since appointed as envoy to the country in February 2001, Pinheiro met with First Secretary of the ruling Myanmar State Peace and Development Council Lieutenant- General Khin Nyunt, Foreign Minister U Win Aung, Home Minister Colonel Tin Hlaing and Labor Minister U Tin Winn.
He also met with leader of the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) Aung San Suu Kyi, who is the party's general secretary and has been under house arrest by the government since September 22, 2000.
During his visit, Pinheiro also toured the country's northern Kachin state, Mandalay and Sagaing divisions. He held talks with Kachin ethnic leaders in Kachin state's capital of Myitkyina.
Meanwhile, on February 13, three days after Pinheiro arrived in Myanmar for the mission, the Myanmar authorities released five more political prisoners, four of whom are NLD members, bringing the total number of the NLD prisoners and NLD-related individuals freed in the country to 222 since January 2001.
The government made the move amid confidence-talks with NLD which was initiated in October 2000. The NLD demands the government to release Aung San Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners in the country and guarantee the rights of free activities for all legal political parties.
