Speaking at a grand party to celebrate the arrival of the 2002 Spring Festival, Bai Zhijian, director of the Liaison Office of the Chinese Central Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), said that "one country, two systems" should be the best mode for complete reunification of the motherland.
Macao witnessed a sound takeoff in the new century, demonstrating great vitality of the "one country, two systems" principle, a high-ranking official noted here Tuesday.
Macao is "sailing stably" in the channel of "one country, two systems", he said.
The SAR retained the momentum of economic development and improved law and order in the past year, Bai cited.
"Motherland supporting us"
The election of a new legislative assembly was completed smoothly. And the opening of the gaming industry was well under way, he added.
Bai attributed the success to strong leadership of the SAR government headed by chief executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah and dedications to implementing the "one country, two systems" principle.
He said that the middle- and long-term goals proposed for the SAR in Edmund Ho's 2002 policy address were applauded by the central government and every walk of life in Macao.
In the new year, the central government will abide by the "one country, two systems" principle as ever and give full support for work of the SAR government, but not intervene in the internal affairs of the SAR, Bai emphasized.
Edmund Ho said at the party that "we feel the great and prosperous motherland is supporting us on our side and marching forward with us."
Macao will take advantage of support from the central government and probe into new ways to cooperate with China's interior to contribute more to the country in a new era and a new economy, he said.
