Visiting EU (European Union)Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy said here Monday that the European Union (EU) would support the accession of Cambodia to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

He told a press conference here Monday afternoon that he had discussed the matter with Prime Minister Hun Sen and Minister of Commerce Cham Prasidh when meeting separately with them earlier Monday.

He said that "his impression is that the Cambodian government is determined to move this process ahead," which could promote structural and economic reforms in the country.

He stressed that the EU and Cambodia will work together to get Cambodia into the WTO as soon as possible.

He also expressed that the EU has intended to provide Cambodia with an initial 3 million Euro in technical assistance to help them on the way, and more assistance may be available in future for Cambodia depending on the need.

The EU official arrived in Cambodia for a 3-day visit from February 17 to 19.
