President Cassam Uteem of Mauritius offered his resignation on Friday after a bill on anti-terrorism was passed by the country's parliament, which he had opposed, according to a report reaching Nairobi from Port Louis, capital of Mauritius.

President Cassam Uteem has sent his resignation to the NationalAssembly (parliament) Speaker Dev Ramnah, the national radio reported.

Uteem's decision followed the second adoption of a piece of anti-terrorism legislation by the parliament on Thursday. The law was initially passed on February 4, the report added.

While concerning the bill would give too much power to the police and fearing it would be abused, Uteem did not approve the bill at that time.

He then resubmitted the bill with 10 amendments, which were turned down by the parliament on Thursday.

Uteem took office in July 1992. His second term is expected to be replace this June.
