Interior and justice ministers of the European Union (EU) on Thursday supported proposals by
Spain, which took the rotating presidency of EU on January 1, 2002, to drive the creation of a visa data bank and a common border policy.
Spain's First Vice Premier and Interior Minister, Mariano Rajoy, emphasized that all of the EU representatives showed an "excellent disposition" towards the Global Plan project to control illicit
immigration and the trafficking of human beings, presented on Thursday by Spain.
Ministers agreed with this effort, according to Rajoy. He is hosting the event along with Spanish Justice Minister Angel Acebes, at the informal two-day meeting of EU interior and justice
ministers taking place in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
Rajoy looked forward to the action plan, formally debated on Thursday by the EU, which would lead to a common policy against illegal immigration and trafficking of human beings, during the semester of the Spanish EU pro tempore presidency.
The plan includes the drafting of common policies to control borders, the granting of visas, agreements with non-member countries to re-admit immigrants in illicit situations and deportation and expulsion measures.
