'Lord of the Rings' Dominates 74th Oscar Awards Nominations

The fantasy trilogy "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" dominated the 74th Oscar Awards nominations announced Tuesday, with 13 nominations including best picture, director and supporting actor.

The fantasy trilogy "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" dominated the 74th Oscar Awards nominations announced Tuesday, with 13 nominations including best picture, director and supporting actor.

Most of the nominations for "The Lord of the Rings" were in the technical fields, including best musical score, best cinematography, best visual effects, best sound, best costume design and best editing.

The film has been a huge box-office success since its release last December, making over 270 million U.S. dollars from the domestic box office.

Other films competing in the best-picture category are "A Beautiful Mind," which was awarded the best drama at this year's Golden Global awards, the musical "Moulin Rouge," "Gosford Park" and "In the Bedroom."

Both "A Beautiful Mind" and "Moulin Rouge" won eight nominations, including best actress nomination for Nicole Kidman in "Moulin Rouge" and best actor nomination for Russell Crowe in " A Beautiful Mind." Jennifer Connelly was nominated for best supporting actress for her role in the "A Beautiful Mind."

Others nominated in the best-actor field included Sean Penn, who plays a retarded father seeking custody of his daughter in "I Am Sam," Will Smith, who portrays boxer Muhammad Ali in "Ali," Denzel Washington, who plays a bad policeman in "Training Day," and Tom Wilkinson for his role of a vigilante father in "In the Bedroom."

In addition to Smith and Washington, Halle Berry was nominated for best actress for playing the widow of an executed killer in " Monster's Ball." This is the first time that three black actors competed in the lead categories since 1972.

Other nominees that will compete with Kidman and Berry for the best actress Oscar included Judi Dench, playing the British writer Iris Murdoch in "Iris", Sissy Spacek, who plays a grieving mother in "In the Bedroom," and Renee Zellweger, who portrays a Londoner haplessly seeking romance in "Bridget Jones's Diary."

Nominated in the academy's new animated feature category were " Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius," "Monsters, Inc." and "Shrek."

Top contenders for the foreign language film Oscar are the Bosnian war film "No Man's Land," which won the Golden Global already, "Amelie" from France, "Elling" from Norway, "Lagaan" from India, and "Son of the Bride" from Argentina.

The 74th Oscar ceremony will be held on March 24 at the newly- built Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
