Like residents in many other Chinese big cities, people in Lanzhou in northwest China are following the hot trend of wearing traditional style Chinese style coats with colorful toggles.

Never before in modern times have so many Chinese decked out in traditional style garb as a way of celebrating the new year.

Chinese style coats in red, blue and green are the favorites for people of all ages in Lanzhou, capital of Gansu Province.

Meanwhile, the traditional red knotted decorations and red lanterns, symbolizing good luck and happiness, have also become popular home decorations and gifts this year in Wenzhou, in east China's Zhejiang Province.

A small shop in the city has sold over 800 red lanterns in the past 10 days. Many of the residents planned to hang the delicate paper lights from balconies.

Today is the first day of the Year of Horse, according to the Chinese lunar calendar. Greetings with horse-related phrases could be heard and horse toys were a common sight.

In China's leading industrial city of Shanghai, thousands of citizens went to the Changfeng Ocean World to visit sea horses that are only several centimeters long. The little sea horses came from southern China's Hainan and Guangzhou provinces.

In Guangzhou of south China's Guangdong Province, traveling, shopping and selecting new apartments have replaced the old fashions of visiting relatives or friends for many citizens.

Today, 98 tour groups arranged by China International Tourist Service started their domestic and overseas journeys.

Two tourist services have arranged tours to Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and some other Asian countries for over 7, 000 Guangzhou residents. The figure is some 25 percent up over last year's same period.

Buying flowers is also a necessary part of the festivities for Guangzhou residents. The city's six newly established flower markets recorded 4.8 million customers before the start of the new year.
