China Town in Bangkok Becomes Tourist Attraction During Chinese New Year

China town area here has become the most attractive tourist destination for this year's Chinese lunar New Year celebration, the Thai News Agency said Tuesday.

China town area here has become the most attractive tourist destination for this year's Chinese lunar New Year celebration, the Thai News Agency said Tuesday.

Apart from lots of Thais with Chinese origin, a number of foreign tourists, including those from Europe, will visit Yaowaraj Road, known as Thailand's China town, to have their own personal touches on the varied celebration.

The area was expected to welcome over 75,000 Chinese tourists alone during the Chinese New Year Festival, mostly from the Chinese mainland, said an earlier statement of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

The TAT and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), with the cooperation of people and businesses on Yaowaraj Road, jointly organized the Chinese New Year Festival, dubbed "China Town Yaowaraj" between February 12 and 13.

Various activities were conducted to celebrate the Chinese lunar Year of the Horse in the China Town area, with the display of the world's longest golden dragon to be the highlight of the celebration.

Yaowaraj Road will be closed for the celebration from 12:01 p.m. to 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, and from 04:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Thai Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will inaugurate the celebration late Wednesday.

The celebration also marks the 110th anniversary of Yaowaraj Road.

The TAT said that with the projected Chinese tourist arrivals, the two-day celebration is expected to help the country earn about 400 million baht (nine million U.S. dollars) in tourism revenues.

Meanwhile, the Airports Authority of Thailand reported that the Aviation Department had approved the landing at the Bangkok International Airport of 399 international flights during the Chinese New Year Festival between February 9 and 20, most of which, or 66 flights, were those of China Eastern Airline.
