Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa and his wife Betty Tung celebrated the first day of the Chinese Lunar New Year Tuesday with villagers of Fanling Wai, an indigenous village in North Hong Kong's Fanling district.
The couple started their goodwill visit by calling on a big family of three generations. The head of the household, Pang Kwong- chuen, is an 85-year-old indigenous villager who has four sons, six daughters and 18 grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Tung shared time of joy and happiness encompassing family reunion and traditional home-made food with the Pang family. They then proceeded to the village square where lion dances heralded their arrival. Dozens of villagers exchanged New Year greetings with the couple.
Accompanied by some 20 village elders in traditional attires, Tung and his wife toured the Pang ancestral hall and were briefed on the history of the some 150-year-old structure.
Before bidding farewell, Mr. and Mrs. Tung distributed laisees (red packets) to children and villagers gathered at the village square to wish everybody good luck in the Year of the Horse.
