Yuan Tao, commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), extended greetings and best wishes to the Macao compatriots on the eve of the traditional Chinese lunar New Year.

The Macao SAR scored outstanding achievements under the leadership of Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah in 2001, he said in a special message.

Yuan cited that the election of the new Legislative Assembly, the first since Macao returned to the motherland, was carried out smoothly in 2001; and the opening of the gambling industry was put into practice successfully to lay a solid foundation for social stability and economic pick-up and create a bright future for the city.

The Macao SAR government and residents exerted concerted efforts to ensure positive increase of the economy, he added.

The practice of "One Country, Two Systems" was further consolidated and struck root in the hearts of the people, contributing to the reunification of the motherland at an early date, the commissioner noted.

Yuan said that "pleasing achievements" were made in the motherland's reform and opening-up drive in the past year.
