Graduates from Zhejiang Engineering University this summer will not all take the trouble of finding jobs. Most of them are able to choose to stay on campusand continue further study, thanks to a newly adopted policy of flexible semesters.
According to the policy, students are allowed to pursue their studies within three to eight years so long as they are able to accumulate the required credits. The usual practice is four years for a bachelor's degree in China.
Participating in extracurricular technology contests and publishing papers can count toward their compulsory credits. Thosewho are capable of studying more majors can apply for a second or a third major.
And college students who fail one test have the chance to retake the exam within the academic year and only the highest scores will be recorded.
Students can opt to stop regular studies temporarily to start up their own business or join the army while their status at the university is maintained.
Education experts say the policy will help college students to pursue their studies as they wish and will ease the pressure of job placement immediately after graduation.
A survey showed that only 60 percent of Chinese graduates can find jobs upon graduation.
