CPC Leaders Call for Efforts to Help People in Need
Clothing and 62,471 yuan (7,526 U.S. dollars) have been distributed among poverty-stricken workers in Zhangjiakou, a city in Hebei, a neighboring province of Beijing.

The donations were collected by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, which has done this for a decade. Hundreds of thousands needy workers across the country have benefited from the program.

In addition, local hot lines for workers in trouble will be open on Saturday to make it possible for them to have help during the Spring Festival, Chinese lunar New Year, which is next Tuesday.

In a recently issued notice, the Unions asked their local branches to record phone calls which ask for help and to deal with them promptly.

President Calls for Help for Needy Workers
Chinese President Jiang Zemin on January 18 wrote a commemoration piece for the 10th anniversary of a nationwide project to help needy workers.

At a meeting marking the project, Wei Jianxing, president of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, called on trade unions at all levels to pay more attention to needy workers nationwide.

Trade unions should invest more in poverty relief, and help needy workers improve their technological level and increase competitiveness, said Wei.

He urged trade union officials to visit needy workers, keep abreast with their requirements, and offer efficient help to those facing economic difficulties. The project should also be linked to the establishment of the social security system.

Chinese Leaders Donate Clothes, Money to Needy People
An office has been set up in the compound occupied by China's central leadership to collect donations of clothing and cash for people in disaster-hit and poverty-stricken areas.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin and other senior Party and government leaders have taken the lead in donating items for the needy.

Located in Zhongnanhai, the office, set up by departments of the general offices of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, has received 19,020 garments and 63,213.4 yuan ( about 7,600 U.S. dollars) in donations.

To date, the civil affairs departments in charge of disaster relief have received 600 million items of clothing and 720 million yuan (about 87 million U.S. dollars), which has been distributed to millions of poor people.

China has lifted about 220 million people out of poverty since 1978 thanks to fast economic development and growing government assistance.

CPC Leaders Call for Efforts to Help People in Need
Addressing a meeting on reducing poverty and helping the needy on February 4, Jiang Zemin, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, called on leading officials at all levels to do more for people in need, to consolidate the Party's leading position, promote social and economic development and safeguard social stability.

The leaders recognized that it is not an easy task to help impoverished people cope with difficulties in daily life and work.

There are 30 million people still living in poverty in rural China and a significant number of laid-off workers from State-owned firms in urban China despite China's rapid economic growth, rising standard of living and its marked progress in the anti-poverty campaign of the past decade. Full Story
