Two ministers from the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC)of the Sri Lankan government resigned Fridayover a dispute on candidates for the upcoming local elections, party officials said.

The CWC which represents minority Tamils of Indian origin and a partner of the ruling United National Party (UNP) said that Housing Minister Arumugam Thondaman and Deputy Livestock Minister Muthu Sivalingam were quitting their ministerial posts.

The CWC spokesman R. Yogarajan said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's UNP government had substituted some of CWC candidates with other party candidates to contest the local government elections scheduled for March.

However, he said the CWC would continue to support the UNP government for its efforts to achieve peace in the war-torn country with Norwegian mediation.

The UNP government came to power after it won the December 5 parliamentary elections last year.
