Measures should be taken to improve services for China's 100 million senior citizens, said Vice Premier Li Lanqing at a national working meeting on aging held February 7 Beijing.
Li, also director of the National Work Committee on Aging (NWCA), made the comment at the fourth session of the NWCA, saying that elderly people have an important role in Chinese society. Respect for the elderly has a long tradition in China.
Any work with the elderly should be conducted under the guidance of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government with social groups taking part in the drive, according to Li.
The vice premier required all relevant government departments to be fully aware of the importance of assisting the elderly which will add to social stability. He would like more government guidance in this area.
Li also requires various regions and institutions to attach great importance to the elderly in 2002, increasing relevant activities, ensuring prompt distribution of pensions and basic living funds, providing more and better recreational facilities and medical services as well as promoting a healthy and comfortable life style for all senior citizens.
Li calls for further development of industries associated with the elderly to meet the increasing needs of China's elderly and better studies of new trends in the area relating to the elderly.
