An unarmed Uruguayan passenger who tried to force himself into the cockpit of a United Airlines (UA) flight Thursday has been stopped after the pilots hit him with an axe.
Argentine authorities say the 28-year-old man had drunk whiskey before and during the flight from Miami to Argentina, and kicked down one panel of the cockpit door mid-flight demanding to see the captain.
They say he got part of his body inside, before being overpowered.
FBI Spokeswoman Judith Orihuela says the man was taken into custody by Argentine police after the aircraft landed at Buenos Aires and received medical care.
He is expected to be returned to the United States by FBI agents.
Witnesses say the man was kicking the door of the cockpit, saying he wanted to talk to the captain.
