HK Chief Executive Attends Legislative Council Q&A Session

Tung Chee Hwa, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), said here Thursday that the "one country, two systems" principle helps maintain the advantages of Hong Kong after its return to the motherland.

Hong Kong has continued to attract overseas investors, while those who emigrated abroad have come back to settle in Hong Kong, he added.

Speaking at the Legislative Council Q&A session, Tung said that Hong Kong is confronted with significant challenges, such as the sliding of the external economy, globalization of the economy, and the restructuring of the economy.

Hong Kong needs new initiatives to give full play to its advantages and its people's potentiality to overcome the difficulties, he said.

To reach this goal, Tung required the government departments to enhance the accountability system, carefully study the will of the people in formulating policies, increase efficiency, control cost and save resources.

Moreover, all the government departments must improve their culture of service to the community, create a better business environment and always give priority to the employment issue, he stressed.

"In the past decade, the mainland economy has been developing soundly. We must make use of the economic success of the mainland to help the economic restructuring of Hong Kong, strengthen Hong Kong's vitality in economy, and create more employment opportunities," he said.

Tung also answered questions on various issues concerned by the Legislative Council members at the Q&A session.
