China has imposed a ban on poultry imports from the United States after a bird flu broke out in Pennsylvania.
The H7N2 subtype of the avian influenzais a highly contagious viral disease, which may cause up to 100 percent mortality in domestic fowls.
To fend off the virus from entering China and safeguard the country's animal industry, China has just issued a notice, urging all Chinese ports to return or destroy birds and other avian products from Pennsylvania.
The notice, issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and the StateGeneral Administration for Quality Supervision and Inspection and Quarantine, barred the poultry and poultry products from Pennsylvania from entering China through mail parcels or with tourists.
Any birds or products smuggled from Pennsylvania should be destroyed by the quarantine department. And those not clearly labeled with place of origin will be treated the same way as if they were from Pennsylvania, the notice says.
So far, there is no scientific information or disease surveillance data to suggest that the H7N2 avian influenza outbreak in chickens and turkeys has or can cause human disease, says the paper.
