United Nations Secretary- General Kofi Annan will attend the opening ceremony of the XIXth Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, U.S., a U.N. spokesman announced in New York Wednesday.
It is the first time a U.N. chief will be at the Games ceremony at the invitation of the International Olympic Committee, spokesman Fred Eckhard said.
Annan leaves U.N. headquarters in New York on Thursday at the invitation of Jacques Rogge, the IOC president.
He replied to Rogge that the U.N. General Assembly's adoption last December of a new resolution on building a better world through sport and the Olympic ideal was a welcome reaffirmation of the value of the cooperation between the world body and the IOC, Eckhard said.
Annan is expected to deliver an opening speech Saturday at a forum on "using support for development to build a brighter future for children worldwide".
