Jiang Hails Morocco King's Visit as Milestone
Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Tuesday the current visit to China by King Mohammed VI of Morocco is a new milestone in the development of bilateral relations. King Mohammed VI is the first King of Morocco to visit China since China and Morocco established diplomatic relations 44 years ago.
During his talks with the King of Morocco at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing this afternoon, Jiang said he and the King met here to set the direction of bilateral relations in the 21st century.
King Mohammed VI is the first King of Morocco to visit China since China and Morocco established diplomatic relations 44 years ago.
Jiang suggested that the two countries should focus their efforts to promote bilateral relations in three areas, building a long, stable, friendly and cooperative relationship geared to the future, pushing forward cooperation for mutual benefits, and strengthening coordination and negotiation so as to safeguard the interests of developing countries and world peace.
Jiang said China will continue to increase trade and economic cooperation with Morocco.
Common stand on international issues
King Mohammed VI said the two countries share a common stand on many international issues and have supported each other in various international matters.
He hoped that since the peace process in the Middle East has reached an impasse, China should play an active role in helping the two parties to break the deadlock, reach a resolution as soon as possible and restart peace negotiations.
Jiang emphasized that the key to the Middle East issue is the rational resolution of the issue of Palestine. He said China has always supported the efforts of the Arab countries to recover their lost land so that the Palestinian people can have their legitimate national rights. Jiang said China is ready to maintain regular contact and negotiations with Morocco and other Arab countries in a bid to play an active role in pushing for an early resolution of the Middle East issue.
After the talks, President Jiang and King Mohammed VI attended a ceremony for the signing of four agreements, including the agreement on economic and technological cooperation between the governments of the two countries as well as one exchange of letters.
China and Morocco Relations
Political Relations
China and Morocco established diplomatic relations on Nov.1958. Over the past 43 years the political relations between China and Morocco has been developing steadily and smoothly.
The two countries share the close or similar views on many international issues. Morocco supports China's stand on Taiwan, human rights and other issues, speaks highly of China's resumption of sovereignty over Hong Kong according to the principle of "One Country, Two Systems" and admires China's successful reform and open policy.
Morocco is willing to further its relations with China. In 1996, China and Morocco signed the Agreement on Holding Regular Political Consultation between the two Foreign Ministries.
Economic and Trade Relations
China dispatched its first medical team to Morocco in Sept 1975. China-Moroccan agreement on medical cooperation was renewed in 1998. Currently there are 120 medical workers working in different medical stations in Morocco.
China and Morocco will expand trade and economic cooperation and strive to maintain a trade balance by diversifying China's imports from Morocco.
This was agreed between top trade officials from the two sides at the fifth meeting of China-Morocco Mixed Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation, co-chaired by Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Shi Guangsheng and Morocco's Minister of Industry, Commerce, Energy and Mines, Mustapha Mansouri.
