Musharraf Warns India Not to Impose Military Solution on Kashmir Issue
Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday warned India that its attempts to impose a military solution of Kashmir issue will not succeed.
Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday warned India that its attempts to impose a military solution of Kashmir issue will not succeed.
Addressing a joint session of the Kashmir Legislative Assembly in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, Musharraf said India cannot consolidate its occupation in defiance of the principles of the UN charter and resolutions of the Security Council.
"Such attempts elsewhere in the world have not succeeded," he said, adding "departure from UN Charter and UN decisions has only prolonged conflict and aggravated the situation."
General Pervez Musharraf emphasized that like other international issues, the Kashmir dispute must also be resolved on the basis of the UN decisions and consistent with the wishes of the Kashmiri people.
He said he is making the appeal in the interest of peace in the South Asian region, urging the international community to mediate and facilitate resolution of the long-standing dispute between Pakistan and India.
General Pervez Musharraf said instead of engaging in brinkmanship, the Indian prime minister should accept his offer of dialogue for peaceful settlement of Kashmir dispute as well as all other issues.
Expressing his disappointment over Indian reaction to his offer of dialogue, the president said instead of responding positively, the Indian leadership has continued with its threatening noises and persisted with massive deployment of troops and military assets along the border which have brought the two countries to eye ball confrontation.
He made it clear that Pakistan wants to live in peace with all its neighbors including India but Pakistan's yearning for peace must never be taken to mean that it will agree to compromise on principles.
