Sino-US Cooperation in Advanced Computer Development Fruitful

CAS and US Intel Corporation Monday co-declared a landmark achievement in the cooperation between the two sides, i.e., "IA-64 ORC" for the framework of the new 64-bit processor of the Intel Corporation.
It indicates that the two sides have unfolded cooperation in advanced computer development.

The instrument of cooperation was co-signed by Jiang Mianheng, president of Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), and Pat Gelsinger, vice president and CTO of the Intel Corporation, one year ago. It indicates that the two sides have unfolded cooperation in advanced computer development, which will exert a profound influence on China's study and development of the CPU.

The compiling system can "translate" the software written by hyper-program language into machine code that is identifiable by processors. It is therefore quite important to the study on the CPU and the improvement of its capability.

So far, the IA-64 Open Research Compiler (ORC) has passed various strict exams. Result shows that its function is nearly 10 percent better than that of the current most advanced ORCs.

It provides a world advanced platform for the study on compiling technology and development of compiling products and has been adopted by many universities in the US.

Galaxy Super Computer to Be Industrialized

April 29 saw the formal laying of foundation of the base for the transformation of Scientific Achievement by the National University of Defense Technology in Dongguan Galaxy (Yinhe) Information Industry Park, which marks a great stride forward in the industrialization of China's Galaxy computer.

It also signals that this great achievement is going to be commercialized.

China Develops World-class Superserver

Chinese scientists announced on February 17, 2001 that they have developed a world-class powerful computer superserver, known as Superserver Dawning 3000.

With a peak floating speed of 403.2 billion operation per second, the system also has a designed storage capacity of up to 16.8 gigabits (GB) of data by its EMI memory, and 3,630 gigabits by its magnetic disks.
