UN Chief Meets With Arab League Leader on Iraq
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan met with the secretary-general of the Arab League, Amre Mousa, Monday to discuss the issue of Iraq, a U.N. spokesman said.
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan met with the secretary-general of the Arab League, Amre Mousa, Monday to discuss the issue of Iraq, a U.N. spokesman said.
"Mousa had been to Baghdad, and returned with a message from Iraqi President Saddam Hussein saying that the Iraqis were prepared to resume dialogue with the secretary-general, without any preconditions," the spokesman said.
"The secretary-general indicated that he was prepared to receive a delegation from Iraq to discuss the implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions," the spokesman said. "He will check his calendar to find a mutually convenient date."
The meeting came as the U.N. Security Council is poised to discuss the issue of Iraq, at which the United States and the United Kingdom are expected to press the 15-member council to allow U.N. arms inspectors to return to Iraq.
