Iranian Military Vows to Defend Country as US Accusations Mount

Top Iranian military officials have vowed to defend their country after US President George W. Bush accused Iran of being part of an "axis of evil."

Top Iranian military officials have vowed to defend their country after U.S. President George W. Bush accused Iran of being part of an "axis of evil."

Commander of Iranian Air Force Reza Pardis said on Monday that his force is vigilant in guarding the nation's air space, state-run IRNA news agency reported.

Brushing aside as "not worrisome" the U.S. threats, Pardis said that Iran has made progress in building long-range rockets and is advancing in using laser-based equipment.

He said that the air force has carried out plans to increase efficiency and implement cost-saving measures in production of equipment and facilities.

Meanwhile, Navy Commander Abbas Mohtaj said on Monday that the Iranian naval forces are closely monitoring all activities in the region and will "deal strongly" with any threat to the national interests.

Mohtaj said the navy is ready to defend the country's integrity and independence.

The United States has recently accused Iran of seeking to acquire weapons of mass destruction and providing shelter to members of the terrorist al-Qaeda network, the two allegations which are repeatedly denied by Iran's top officials.
