About 250,000 Ethiopian Children Live With HIV/AIDS

The Ethiopian Health Ministry said Monday in Addis Ababa that about 250,000 children under the age of five in the country are living with HIV/AIDS.

The Ethiopian Health Ministry said Monday in Addis Ababa that about 250,000 children under the age of five in the country are living with HIV/AIDS.

A total of 3.2 million people are estimated to live with HIV/ AIDS in the country and 250,000 are below five, said Desta Woldeyohannes, team leader of the HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases Prevention and Control of Health Ministry, cited the Ethiopian News Agency.

Addressing at a ten-day training on HIV/AIDS counseling services, she said the training is aimed at increasing the number of professionals that would offer psychosocial counseling services to the people living with HIV/AIDS.

She said the ministry has decided to train 250 HIV/AIDS counselors this year, of whom 37 were attending the first-round training.

Ethiopia, one of the worst hit places in the world by the epidemic, is reported to record the number of AIDS deaths by the year of 2014 to about 525,000 people.

Earlier, the Ethiopian Red Cross Society said that it would do its utmost to cure the spread of the HIV/AIDS pandemic across the country.

At the same time, the Ethiopian government has also put the issue on the top of the agenda in the coming years.
