China Uncovers Largest Drug Trafficking Case

Police in southwest China's Yunnan Province announced Monday they have uncovered the largest drug trafficking ring ever found in the country with 21 suspects under arrest. A border check of a truck in Yunnan on November 8 last year led to the seizure of 672.9 kilograms of heroin the biggest drug haul ever.

A border check of a truck in Yunnan on November 8 last year led to the seizure of 672.9 kilograms of heroin the biggest drug haul ever. Police have carried out a thorough investigation.

Twelve of the apprehended are Hong Kong citizens. Their arrest marks an end to the police investigation of the cross-border drug case, and the smashing of the drug-trafficking route from Myanmar to China's Yunnan. Police confiscated three million yuan in drug- dealing money.

Sun Dahong, vice director of the Yunnan Police Bureau, attributed the success of the operation to China's intensified and coordinated anti-drug drive, which sends a warning to international drug dealers.

Over 8000 Drug Cases Uncovered in Yunnan in 1999

There are as many as 8005 cases involving drug smuggling and trafficking having been uncovered last year in Yunnan and 10,223 captured. The last few years have seen a steep rise in the number of across-border cases smuggling drug into Yunnan, especially "ice" drug; measures have been taken to prevent flowing in of drug.

In 1997 and 1998, police guards in Yunnan confiscated 16.89 kilograms and 18.81 kilograms of ice drug respectively and the number soared to 383.72 kilograms in 1999, 24 folds over the previous two years. The first four months this year, however, have seen 82.5 kilograms of ice drugs having been captured.

Aside from ice drug, 4342.99 kilograms of drugs like heroin and opium and 670.14 tons of chemicals that can be easily turned into drugs were seized last year.



China, Vietnam Cooperate in Drug Prohibition

The Public Security Department of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has reached agreement with the Vietnamese Ministry of Police on drug prohibition.

The governments and peoples of China and Vietnam want to prohibit the trade in and the use of drugs.

China Launches New Campaign to Crack Down on Drugs

China has decided to begin a new and active anti-drug campaign nationwide lasting until July, 2002.Main targets will be dance and singing halls, night clubs and other places of entertainment where drug users and dealers gather.Any establishment deeply involved in drugs and with ongoing problems with drugs will be closed down and their operators will be punished.

The campaign includes concerted efforts to find drug addicts and help them get rid of their addiction. Other crimes such as smuggling and selling drugs like opium, heroin, ice and "shaking-head" pills will be targeted. Places with a high occurrence of these crimes will be the key areas for action.

About Yunnan

Yunnan is noted with a 3,200-km border with Myanmar, Viet Nam and Laos, lying close to the notorious Golden Triangle. Named in Chinese for short as "Dian", it locates at the south-west part of China. Total area is 394 thousand square kilometers. It has the population at the number of more than 40 million, with 25 kinds of minorities of total 56 in whole China. There are more than 25 million Han nation among them, taking percentage of 66.8.

Kunming is the capital of Yunnan province. It has got a name of "Spring City" by its weather like spring all year around.
