The natural population growth rate of Chengdu, capital city of southwest China's Sichuan Province, was 1.52 per thousand in 2001, the lowest rate recorded for the past 30 years.

The population of Dayi County and Qionglai and Pengzhou cities recorded negative growth for the first time.

Chengdu is one of the most populous cities in western China. The success of the low population growth rate lies in the implementation of government regulations, wide publicity of the family planning policy and scientific management, said Yang Hongju, director of the Chengdu City Family Planning Committee.

Chengdu has adhered to a policy of "economic growth and population decrease", city mayor Li Chuncheng said. The city's gross domestic product rose 13 percent to 149.1 billion yuan last year. The disposable income of urban residents climbed to 8,126 yuan last year, up 6.3 percent on a year-on-year basis.
