China to Strengthen Cooperation with Laos: Premier Zhu

China attaches great importanceto developing neighborly relations of cooperation with Laos and is willing to extend such cooperation to all practical fields, Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said on Monday when meeting Laotian Prime Minister Boungnang Vorachit.

Zhu Rongji Meets Laotian Visitors
China attaches great importanceto developing neighborly relations of cooperation with Laos and is willing to extend such cooperation to all practical fields, Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said on Monday when meeting Laotian Prime Minister Boungnang Vorachit.

Zhu said that both countries should maintain frequent high-level official visits, and increase exchanges between government departments and bordering provinces as well. Both should also intensify cooperation in the exchange and training of expertise, he added.

On international and regional affairs, the two countries shouldsupport each other and consolidate efforts in coordination, Zhu said.

On trade and economic cooperation, Zhu said that positive results have been achieved. China is willing to work with Laos on agriculture, forestry, the exploitation of mineral resources and infrastructure construction, he said.

Zhu and Laotian Prime Minister Boungnang both spoke highly of the development of bilateral ties after a joint statement was published during Chinese President Jiang Zemin's visit to Laos in 2000.

Boungnang said that China's development will be a major contribution to world peace and that friendly relations of cooperation with China will also be conducive to the construction and development of Laos itself.

After the meeting, the two governments signed five documents: atreaty of extradition, an accord on economic and technological cooperation, an agreement on China's soft loans to Laos, an agreement on cooperation between the two central banks and an educational cooperation program between the two education ministries for the years 2002 to 2005.
