Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on Saturday lashed out against former colonial power Britain and threatened stern action against unrepentant whites in the country.

Addressing hundreds of Zimbabwe African National Union- Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) supporters at Chinhamora growth point in Mashonaland Central province, Mugabe said if the British government continued to interfere in the internal affairs of Zimbabwe, he was prepared to do anything to regain its sovereignty.

"We can never give up Zimbabwe," he said, adding that "we are prepared to go back to our trenches if the situation demands and if the British want to oppress us again."

Mugabe, who came to power in 1980, said if the British continued with their negative attitude, his government would not hesitate to take land from the whites.

About 60,000 whites live among 13 million blacks in Zimbabwe. About 4,500 white farmers own a third of the nation's land.

Mugabe said he no longer felt pity for the whites in Zimbabwe who had no sense of unity and wanted to continue with segregation of races.

Mugabe attacked the opposition Movement for Democratic Change ( MDC) for trying to perpetuate colonialism and giving Zimbabwe back to the Rhodesians.

The MDC wants to change our African culture to that of whites," he said.

Mugabe, who had earlier met with traditional leaders, said the government would identify farms in the area suitable for acquisition on which deserving people from the particular area would be resettled.

He appealed to ZANU-PF supporters and other political parties to desist from violence.

Mugabe urged the people to engage in developmental projects and small businesses and apply to the government for loans.

In a separate meeting with traditional chiefs, Mugabe said the government was importing maize to avert any possibilities of starvation.

He told them that Libya had also agreed to give Zimbabwe some petrol.

Mugabe was accompanied by ZANU-PF politburo members Sydney Sekeramayi, Olivia Muchena, David Karimanzira, Elliot Manyika and John Nkomo.
