US Calls for New Relationship With Russia

Deputy Defense Minister of the United States Paul Wolfowitz said Saturday that the U.S. has a "historic opportunity" to build a new relationship with Russia.

Deputy Defense Minister of the United States Paul Wolfowitz said Saturday that the U.S. has a "historic opportunity" to build a new relationship with Russia.

"The United States and Russia have engaged in a new dialogue that we hope will fashion a new strategic relationship," he said at the 38th Munich Conference on Security Policy.

The U.S. relationship with Russia centers on preserving the mutual threat of massive nuclear destruction to a relationship that is based on common security interests, among them fighting terrorism, said the deputy defense minister.

"In moving toward a normal, healthy relationship, we have been able to set aside the fears of the past and plan for radical reductions in the legacy unclear forces of the Cold War," he said.

Military and foreign affairs officials from over 40 countries gathered here Saturday to discuss the global security situation after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

The representatives will talk on the reasons for the terrorist attacks on the United States and seek ways to prevent further terrorist events and create peace in the world, Chairman Horst Teltschik of the 38th Munich Conference on Security Policy said atthe opening ceremony.

The impact of the terrorist attacks on Europe, the relations between Russia and NATO and the security situation in central Asiawill also be discussed during the two-day meeting.

Over 400 representatives including defense ministers of most NATO countries, and deputies of the Shanghai Five Organization attended the meeting.
