President Calls to Increase Radio, TV Coverage in Tibet, Xinjiang
President Jiang Zemin stressed on Friday that increasing broadcasting coverage in northwest China,the Tibet Autonomous Region and Xinjiang Uygur Region in particular, would help promote economic development and maintain social stability in the regions.

He said the project of expanding radio and TV broadcasting networks in the regions is of great importance and that efforts should be made to speed it up.
Jiang, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, watched a computer demonstration of the project and visited the project's monitoring center.
The president said that the project, which was launched in September 2000, would transmit the central authorities' policies and various TV programs to a greater number of households in the regions.
He noted that the project is welcomed by local residents, especial ethnic minority groups.
The project is being implemented by the State Administration ofRadio, Film and Television and local bureaus of radio, film and television.
