New Year Period to See 6.34 Million People Cross Mainland-HK Boundary
About 6.34 million people would cross the land boundary checkpoints to and from the Chinese mainland during the forthcoming Lunar New Year period, representing an increase of 11.5 percent over the same period lastyear, according to the Immigration Department.

A spokesperson of the Immigration Department said Friday the peak period of cross-boundary traffic would fall between February 2 and 21, 2002. It is estimated about 5.22 million passengers witha daily average of 261,000 will cross the boundary via the Lo Wu checkpoint, representing 82 percent of the total cross-boundary passenger traffic and an increase of 9.7 percent compared with that of last year.
The spokesperson added that the number of departing passengers at Lo Wu may reach a peak of 190,000 on February 11, 2002 while the peak of arrivals would be on February 17, 2002 with 200,000 people returning to Hong Kong.
The highest daily traffic is expected to reach 300,000 on February 9 and 14, 2002. It is anticipated that the passenger traffic at Lok Ma Chau checkpoint will also be very heavy during the period with a forecast of 830,000 passengers or a daily average of about 41,000 passengers, according to the spokesperson.
To cope with the traffic demands, the Immigration Department has arranged 72 officers to reinforce the boundary checkpoints during the festive period through internal deployment, the spokesperson said.
Besides, the Immigration Department and Shenzhen authorities will strengthen cooperation and liaison so as to ensure smooth andorderly movements across the boundary.
