The founder and president of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Swiss professor Klaus Schwab, on Thursday urged all stake-holders of the world economy to make collective efforts for a successful recovery from the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11 and from a widespread economic slowdown.

He made the remarks at the opening session of the WEF 32nd annual meeting in New York, which is an unprecedented venue for the WEF that used to hold its annual meetings in the eastern Swiss city of Davos.

The gathering in New York is a gesture to demonstrate solidarity to the wounded city where some 3,000 people lost their lives on September 11 during the collapse of the twin 110-story towers of the World Trade Center after two hijacked passenger planes slammed into them.

Schwab urged some 3,000 participants to commit themselves to helping find ways of economic growth and making globalization beneficial for all by redefining collectively the challenges facing the world in the 21st century.

In his welcome speech, New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg said the presence of so many people from around the world shows their confidence in New York City, which remains strong despite terrorist attacks.

The five days of discussions cover a wide rage of topics themed Leadership in Fragile Times: A Vision for a Shared Future.

The WEF defines itself as the foremost global partnership of business, political, intellectual and other leaders of society committed to improving the state of the world.

The forum is an independent, nonprofit foundation that acts in the spirit of entrepreneurship in the global public interest to further economic growth and social progress.
