The first annual conference of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) will be held on April 12-13 in Boao, the BFA's headquarters in south China's island province of Hainan.
This was announced by Zhang Xiang, acting secretary-general of the BFA, on Thursday in Beijing at a press conference held by the Information Office of the State Council.
The annual conference will be attended by about 1,000 participants including state leaders, ministers, celebrities, scholars and business representatives, said Zhang.
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji will head a delegation to the conference and deliver the keynote address, Zhang stated, adding that other senior Chinese officials and the first Chinese Ambassador to the World Trade Organization Sun Zhenyu would also attend the conference.
According to Zhang, the general theme of the conference is "a new century, new situation and new task -- cooperation and development of the Asian economy", and will begin with a plenary session and three concurrent sessions, namely, a regional cooperation series, a sector strategy series and a country outlookseries.
Prior to the conference, the first General Meeting of the Members of the forum will be convened to elect the Members to the Board of Directors, and to adopt the BFA Charter, Zhang added.
The BFA, initiated in 1998 by former Philippine President FidelV. Ramos, former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke and former Japanese Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa, is a non-profit and non-governmental open international organization which holds regular conferences in Boao.
The BFA's Inaugural Ceremony was held in Boao in February last year, during which the BFA was officially launched.
As the first international organization with headquarters in China, the BFA has completed the fundamental tasks of the forum within less than a year, said Zhang
The BFA's website (www.boaoforum.org) has also been officially launched, added Zhang.
He said the BFA's objective is to be an Asia-based and globally-visioned forum, which can provide a platform for political, business and academic leaders from all over the world to speak together on an equal footing.
He summarized the BFA's functions and services as the six Es, namely, economic forum, exchange of information, evaluation based on research, education and training, exhibition and exposition, and E-service.
