Construction of the convention center of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), a non-governmental Asian conference organization, has started in Boao, Qionghai City, in south China's Hainan province.

The convention center will be situated in the northeastern part of the Dongyu Islet, Boao, a serene scenic harbor on the eastern coast of Hainan Island, and will have a total floor space of 25,000 sq. m., including a multi-functional central meeting room, a studio and a press center. The construction will cost 1.1 billion yuan (about 133 million U.S. dollars).

The convention center is one of many projects to be built during the second phase of the construction of a permanent venue for BFA conferences, which is estimated to cost more than five billion yuan (about 602 million U.S. dollars).

Other projects that still need to be constructed during the second phase include an entertainment center, two holiday villa districts and two new hotels. All the projects of the second phase will be finished and ready for service by February 2003.

BFA was established in Boao in February 2001, with the attendance of 195 people from 25 Asian countries and Australia, including foreign heads of states, former heads of states, specialists and diplomats.
