China, Ukraine Issue Joint Communique on Ukraine FM's Visit

China reaffirms its support for Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and its accession to the World Trade Organization, and Ukraine upholds the one-China policy, according to a joint communique issued by the two sides Thursday.

China reaffirms its support for Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and its accession to the World Trade Organization, and Ukraine upholds the one-China policy, according to a joint communique issued by the two sides Thursday.

The joint communique says Ukrainian Foreign Minister Anatoly Maximovich, on his official visit to China from January 27 to 31, met with Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji and discussed with Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan a wide range of issues in a "friendly and frank atmosphere of mutual trust."

The two sides exchanged views on strengthening cooperation in political, economic, social and cultural areas, and consolidating the legal basis of bilateral treaty.

They also discussed the issue of Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma's visit to China at the invitation of Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

The communique says that after 10 years of diplomatic ties bothsides are satisfied with China-Ukraine bilateral relations which have borne rich results. The comprehensive, friendly and cooperative partnership based on long-term mutual trust and coordination, jointly proposed by the two heads of state, is a historical choice the two sides have made in the new century.

The two sides are committed to implement the proposal and to work towards sustainable development of relations, the communique says.

China reiterates that it supports Ukraine's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, respects its road of development and continues to keep its promise to provide security for Ukraine.

Ukraine reiterates that the government of the People's Republicof China is the sole legitimate government for the whole of China,and Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory.

The Ukrainian government upholds the one-China policy, and opposes any attempt to create "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan", and opposes "Taiwan Independence."

The two sides discussed cooperation in areas of the economy andtrade, industry, construction, new technology and finance.

They noted that they share identical or similar views on many international and regional issues. They both oppose terrorism in any form, and hold that the fight against terrorism should be aimed at uprooting it. In this regard international cooperation under the guidance of the United Nations and its Security Council should be strengthened.

They agree to step up coordination within international bodies like the UN, and work for the establishment of a just and reasonable world order.

Zlenko invited Tang to visit Ukraine.

During his China tour, Zlenko also visited Shanghai and Hong Kong, and presided over a ceremony for the opening of the Ukrainian consulate general in Shanghai.
