Fear for the life of kidnapped Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl has grown as his Pakistani captors threatened in an e-mail message to kill him within 24 hours unless their demands are swiftly met by the United States, CNN reports Wednesday.

The e-mail, received by various western and Pakistani news agencies, said other American journalists in Pakistan could be targeted.

It also accused Mr Pearl, 38, of working for Israeli intelligence, according to a report in the paper.

The Wall Street Journal announced it had seen the e-mail and vigorously denied Mr Pearl was an intelligence operative for any nation.

Pakistan, meanwhile, arrested Mubarak Ali Shah Gilani in connection with Mr Pearl's disappearance.

The US reporter disappeared last week after telling his wife he was going to interview Mr Gilani, a leader of a little-known Muslim militant group Tanzeem-ul-Fuqra, based in the eastern city of Lahore.
