Improving overseas publicity work

Zhao Qizheng, minister of the Information Office of the State Council, said on Wednesday that China's work of overseas publicity should offer more useful information to overseas people and help them share the opportunities China provides.

Zhao made the remark at a three-day national meeting on the work of overseas publicity which closed here Wednesday.

He told the participants to study the needs and interests of overseas audience more closely so as to produce suitable publicity products.

Enhancing mutual communication

"It is necessary to enhance the communication between China and the rest of the world against the background of globalization," he said, noting Beijing's successful bid to host the 2008 Olympic Games, the success of the ninth Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and China's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

He said that different provinces and regions should draw up their own specific plans for overseas publicity to meet different interests.

For instance, inland provinces can provide foreign investors with information on business opportunities developed from the ongoing go-west movement, while economically developed coastal cities, such as Shanghai, should aim at high-level international activities, Zhao said.

Publicity for overseas service of what's going on in China has greatly improved since the country introduced the policy of reform and opening up, and laid a sound foundation for further development, Zhao Qizheng, director of the Information Office of the State Council, told a national meeting in this regard held last year.

Yet more should be done to open new channels of publicity for overseas services in accordance with China's modernization and the dramatic changes worldwide, the official said.

He stressed that more creative work should be done to promote publicity for overseas service at a time when China has started to implement its 10th Five-Year Plan to accelerate socialist economic development at the beginning of the new century. >>details
