Chinese Foreign Minister Meets Japanese Guests

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said on Tuesday that Chinese leaders place great importance on the development of the friendship between China and Japan.

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said on Tuesday that Chinese leaders place great importance on the development of the friendship between China and Japan.

He made the remarks during a meeting with Japanese representatives attending a meeting of heads of non-governmental groups of Sino-Japanese friendship in Beijing.

Tang said Chinese President Jiang Zemin made an important speech about strengthening the friendship between China and Japan when he met with the Japanese representatives on Monday. He said Jiang's speech demonstrated the importance that the third generation of Chinese leadership with Jiang Zemin at its core places on the development of the direct friendship between China and Japan.

He said this year is the 30th anniversary of the normalization of bilateral relations between the two countries. He hopes that both sides will work together to promote mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples and push forward bilateral relations by holding such commemorative activities as "the Year ofChinese Culture" and "the Year of Japanese Culture". Tang hopes that the friendship groups in Japan will play an active role in these activities.

The Japanese representatives said they are encouraged by the meeting with President Jiang Zemin and by his speech. They said the 23 Japanese groups attending this meeting will take the opportunity to increase their mutual links and secure the success of various commemorative activities of the 30th anniversary of thenormalization of bilateral relations.
