10th Anniversary of China-Ukraine Diplomatic Ties Celebrated

The Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) held a reception in Beijing Monday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Ukraine.

The Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) held a reception in Beijing Monday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Ukraine.

Addressing guests at the reception, CPAFFC President Chen Haosu said that with a long history and splendid culture, China and the Ukraine are two great countries, and friendship between them is of long standing.

He said the Chinese government has consistently stressed the importance of friendship between the two countries. Over the past decade, with joint efforts, China and the Ukraine have expanded communication and cooperation in politics, trade, science and technology, culture and education, and have made great achievements.

He pointed out the two sides have cooperated with each other in international affairs.

Anatoly Zlenko, foreign minister of the Ukraine was present and spoke at the reception.

He said during the past 10 years, the two countries have developed mutual understanding and bilateral cooperation in the international community has become increasingly mature.

He hopes that the friendly cooperation between the two sides will rise to a new level in the 21st century.

    1. Review of the relations between the two countries

    On January 4, 1992, Chinese representative Wang Jinqing and Ukrainian representative Makarevich signed a statement formally establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries. The bilateral relations of the two nations since then has been developing smoothly and the leaders of the two countries frequently exchanged visits.

    The agreements signed between the two countries have exceeded 30 covering fields in economy and trade, science and technology, military technology, culture and sports, health, post and telecommunications and environmental protection. The volume of bilateral trade in the first half of 1999 reached US$210 millions, an increase of 77.1% compared with the previous year. The number of enterprises solely owned by China and joint ventures in Ukraine has exceeded 60 with a registered capital of US$ 10 millions. Many regions of the two nations are enjoying an active contacts and 14 Chinese provinces, cities and prefectures have established good-neighborly relations with their counterparts in Ukraine.
