At least 18 people have died of malaria in Zimbabwe in the past week and more than 12,580 others treated of the disease countrywide, according to the official Herald on Saturday.

During the previous week, only seven deaths and 6,710 cases were reported.

Joconiah Chirenda, a senior official of the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare's Disease Prevention and Control, has attributed the increase in malaria cases to the nearly one-month dry spell, which is favorable for the breeding of mosquitoes.

He said an increase was expected as the malaria peak period was beginning but said it had been too steep at this point.

He said there were two deaths reported in Harare and it was believed that both cases were of people who had come into the city.
