This south China city Tuesday burnt over 23 tons of garbage containing mad cow disease virus, imported from Belgium.
The garbage was discovered in 708 tons of waste paper in 30 containers this month by the Administration for Exit-Entry Inspection and Quarantine of Guangdong Province.
Wheat, broomcorn and calabash seeds were first spotted in one container, then came beef, wood, flour, rotten dog food, used shoes, rubber gloves, chocolate and soft drink wrappers in other containers.
Officials of the administration sealed up the containers and sterilized the contaminated areas immediately.
According to the relevant provisions, animals and plants must have official quarantine certificates before exportation, and plant seeds and meat especially need ratification from the top quarantine department in the importing country.
However, the officials said, the import of items containing mad cow virus is strictly forbidden in China.
