Guangdong Reports Growth in Foreign Trade

South China's Guangdong Province reported a foreign trade volume of 176.49 billion U.S. dollars in 2001, up 3.8 percent year-on-year, accounting for 34.62 percent of the national total.

South China's Guangdong Province reported a foreign trade volume of 176.49 billion U.S. dollars in 2001, up 3.8 percent year-on-year, accounting for 34.62 percent of the national total.

Official statistics show that exports rose 3.8 percent to 95.42 billion U.S. dollars, while imports rose 3.7 percent to 81.07 billion U.S. dollars.

Machinery and electrical products accounted for 58 percent of the province's total exports in 2001. New and hi-tech products accounted for 23.4 percent.

A total of 76.51 billion U.S. dollars worth of exports in processing trade was reported, accounting for more than 80 percent of provincial exports and for more than half of China's exports in processing trade in 2001.

Large export enterprises, each with exports worth over 100 million U.S. dollars, reported a combined 43.56 billion U.S. dollars of exports last year.

China's foreign trade volume reached 509.77 billion U.S. dollars in 2001, an increase of 7.5 percent year-on-year. Of this foreign trade volume, exports rose 6.8 percent to 266.16 billion U.

S. dollars and imports rose 8.2 percent to 243.61 billion U.S. dollars.
