Part of a group of buildings in Hanyang district of Wuhan, in central China's Hubei province, constructed in violation of the country's flood control regulations, was successfully demolished early on Friday.

According to local sources, the group of buildings, known as "Waitan Huayuan (Beach Villas)", developed by a local company at a cost of 160 million yuan (about 19.28 million U.S. dollars), were constructed inside the massive embankment designed to prevent the Yangtze river from flooding the urban districts of Wuhan, the most important city in the middle reaches of the river.

Relevant departments have ordered the buildings to be demolished as they may obstruct the flow of flooded Yangtze river water.

But most of the villas and apartments in "Waitan Huayuan" had already been sold, involving a total of 70,000 sq m in combined floor space, just 200 meters away from the Wuhan Yangtze river bridge, the first such bridge ever built on the Yangtze.

In accordance with the requirements issued by the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, Hubei province and Wuhan city have set up a leading group responsible for resettling the residents, allocating funds and mobilizing manpower to help.

The structure blasted on Friday was the No.1 building, with a total floor space exceeding 10,000 sq m, occupied by 44 households.

The occupants of the No.1 buildings had all been relocated one month ago, and the nearby second building was evacuated one day before the blast was conducted.

The removal of the illegal building was welcomed by local residents, said local sources, and the remaining buildings will be fully dismantled before April 15, when the Yangtze's spring flood season begins.
