Peru's judicial department on Thursday issued an order to arrest the ex-president Alberto Fujimori, who fled to Japan in 2000 amidst a corruption scandal.

Fujimori was found to have supplied 15 million U.S. dollars to Vladimiro Montesinos in compensation for his service in Peru's intelligence department when Montesinos fled Peru to Panama for asylum because of a political scandal in 2000.

Montesinos was formerly Fujimori's close advisor and widely regarded as the de facto head of Peru's intelligence service. Corruption scandals had plagued him before a video tape came to the notice of the public in September 2000 showing his bribing of an opposition lawmaker. This led to a political crisis in Peru andthe dismissal of Fujimori by the parliament in November, which cut short his third-term Presidency.
