President Jiang Zemin on Thursday met with Afghan Interim Government Chairman Hamid Karzai.
Jiang told Karzai, who is on his first visit to China since he became chairman of the Afghan Interim Government, "We are getting to know each other in no time."
"I heard yesterday that your costume has taken the lead in world fashion," Jiang said.
Karzai said China has a long history and that he felt honored to visit the country. Although this is his first China visit, he said he felt quite at home.
"When I come next time, we will become good friends," Karzai said. The meeting was still going on at the time of press.
After the meeting, Karzai will conclude his visit and leave Beijing.
Karzai arrived here on Wednesday on a two-day visit to China as
the guest of the Chinese government after attending the Tokyo International Conference on Reconstruction Assistance to Afghanistan.
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met with Karzai Wednesday evening, and afterwards they attended a signing ceremony for the exchange of notes on the Chinese government's provision to the Afghan Interim Government of one million U.S. dollars and 30-million-yuan-worth (about 3.6 million U.S. dollars) of emergency assistance in the form of goods.
