In a move to strengthen protection of property rights involving audio and video discs, Shenzhen has smashed 16 such underground businesses since the beginning of last year. Some 7,700 booths that sold pirated or illegal discs have also been punished or removed.

Meanwhile, the Shenzhen Customs hunted down 46 disc smuggling cases, and seized 34.51 million discs in this period, accounting for 70 percent of those seized by China's customs authorities.
Situated near the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, Shenzhen used to be a major distribution center for smuggled or pirated discs. The city strengthened its crackdown on disc pirating or smuggling at the beginning of last year.
Among its major measures, the city has established a 3-million-yuan (about 361,446 US dollars) fund to reward informers of such illegal activities. The authorities said that this step has provedvery successful.
