China will start building two hydropower stations in the next four years in Jinshajiang, on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.
These are the Xiangjiaba hydropower station which will supply power from the Shuifu County in southwest China's Yunnan Province to Yibin City in southwest China's Sichuan Province and the Xiluodu hydropower station from Yongshan County in Yunnan to Leibo County in Sichuan, says Li Yingde, vice director of the provincial Planning Commission of Yunan.
Li says the two stations, financed by the Yangtze River Three Gorges Corporation, will start building in 2004 and 2006 respectively. The former will have an installed capacity of 7.2 million kilowatts and the latter 14.48 million kilowatts.
The Jinshajiang River which is 2,290 kilometers long, originates in Tanggula Range and flows through Qinghai, Tibet, Yunnan, and Sichuan.
Water is mostly stored in the river's middle and lower reaches where China plans to build 12 hydropower stations to share a 59.08-million-kilowatts installed capacity.
A power station situated between Lijiang County and Shangri-La County in Yunnan Province is under construction.
