Vice President of Tongji University Detained for Bribe-taking

Wu Shiming, executive vice president of Shanghai-based Tongji University, was detained recently by the Procuratorate of Ningbo City, east China's Zhejiang Province, for being suspected of taking bribes, Guangming Daily reported Tuesday.

Before his detainment, Wu, aged 57, also led the university's postgraduate research school, said the newspaper.

The newspaper cited sources from the Ningbo Procuratorate as saying Wu acted as deputy president of Hangzhou University from 1992 to 1998 and starting from January 1993, Wu was concurrently appointed as general manager and also legal representative of Ningbo-based Zhida Real Estate Development Company, a full-asset firm of Hangzhou University.

Wu was suspected of having taken a large sum of bribes during his tenure, said the sources, adding that the investigations into the Wu's case are still going on.
