Facing the robust foreign competitors who expanded their business in China after the country's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), China will survive the competition through mergers, acquisitions and reorganization.

Facing the robust foreign competitors who expanded their business in China after the country's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), China will survive the competition through mergers, acquisitions and reorganization.

"Domestic retailers should carry out trans-regional expansion to confront challenges and grasp opportunities," Guo Geping, chairman of the China Chainstore & Franchise Association was quoted as saying.

Shanghai Hualian to open more supermarkets
Shanghai Hualian plans to open 10 supermarkets in China, each with a business area of 5,000 to 10,000 square meters, said general manager Hua Zhou, "We are anticipating face-off with Wal-Mart Stores Inc."

Hualian's business has been limited to south China, eased into Beijing early last year and made an ambitious plan to open 6,000 outlets throughout China within five years.

Experts said establishing large retailing groups is another way for domestic retailers to survive the fierce competition as the market is fully opened.

Wal-Mart licensed for global center in Shenzhen
The America-based chain store retailer Wal-Mart was licensed December 03,2001to undertake the construction of a global purchasing center in Shenzhen, which has been eyed by Wal-Mart as a place of strategic value for its global expansion.

Since 1996, Wal-Mart has set up six chain stores in the city, with China growing into its largest supplier.

Carrefour to further expand business in China
And the France-based Carrefour plans to open 10 chain stores every year and organize 10 purchasing centres in China.

Carrefour is aiming at over 30 cities in Chinese market. It will open more stores in Beijing.

When asked whether Carrefour will further expand its business in China, Jean-Luc Cheau, president of Carrefour (China) answered firmly,"sure".
